Career Coaching vs Career Counseling: What Students and Parents Must Know

When I began my journey as an educator, little did I know that one of my biggest lessons would come, not from the classroom, but from a conversation with a student who said — “Ma’am, our school called a career counselor today. They told us how amazing BBA and BCom are and how we should join their coaching institute to secure our future.”

Later, another student said — “Our university held a session. They praised every course they offered. But when I asked about animation and design, they told me it’s not a good career path — too much competition.”

That was my lightbulb moment.
These weren’t career counseling sessions.
They were sales pitches.

🎭 Career Counseling vs Career Coaching — What Most Don’t Know

There’s a huge misconception floating around — that all career guidance is the same. But here’s the truth:

👉 Career Counseling, as practiced widely, is often tied to admissions.
Be it a coaching institute, a university, or an education consultant — the advice is shaped by what they offer, not necessarily what’s best for you.

On the other hand…

👉 Career Coaching is neutral, student-first, and deeply reflective.
It’s not about pushing you toward what they have — it’s about helping you discover what you are capable of becoming.

🐒🐘🦁 The Animal Story — Not Just for Exams, But for Careers Too

Remember the famous animal story where a monkey, elephant, fish, and bird were all asked to climb a tree — and the fish was labeled a failure?

Well, we’ve recreated this story in real life too — but with career choices.

We’ve created a one-size-fits-all race:

  • One exam.

  • One list of “top” careers.

  • One institute.

  • One story.

But what if the fish was meant to swim, not climb?

🦉 From a Flock of Confused Birds, Rose One Wise Owl

To challenge this flawed system, I created Prof. Drouu’s Career Coaching — born from the belief that:

“Not every student is meant to follow the same path. Some are meant to create new ones.”

🔵 For Class 10 students, I wrote
🧭 “Prof. Drouu Career Coaching” — a self-reflective guide that helps students understand themselves before choosing a stream.

🔵 For Class 12 students, I developed
🎯 “Prof. Drouu Career Compass” — a practical, reality-based book that doesn’t glorify just ‘popular’ careers, but explores paths aligned to the student’s abilities and aspirations.

🏛️ Anecdotes from the Ground — What Students Are Facing

Over the years, I’ve had dozens of students walk into my class and whisper the same story in different forms:

“Ma’am, they told us engineering is the best, and they have 100% placement.”
“They said design is not a real career. It’s just a hobby.”
“They told us to join their academy first if we want to succeed.”

No one asked — “What do you want?”
No one checked — “What are you good at?”

These weren’t counseling sessions. These were career advertisements disguised as guidance.

🧭 Why Career Coaching is the Need of the Hour

💡 Career Coaching isn’t about predicting the future — it’s about preparing the student to create it.

  • It’s neutral — no tie-ups, no targets.

  • It’s informed — based on aptitude, interests, and emerging careers.

  • It’s student-first — not syllabus-first.

Just like the wise owl in our latest visual post — coaching allows each student (be it a monkey, fish, or bird) to take their own rightful path.

📣 So, What Should You Ask as a Parent or Student?

✅ Is the counselor associated with a coaching institute or university?
✅ Are they promoting specific courses they offer?
✅ Are they listening or just selling?

If it’s not about YOU, it’s not career coaching.

💬 Final Thoughts: Your Career Deserves More Than a Commission

This movement is not just professional for me — it’s deeply personal.
I’ve seen too many bright students shrink into confusion because someone told them their passion wasn’t “practical.”

Through Prof. Drouu’s books and coaching philosophy, I’m on a mission to give students back their voice and vision.

Because:

“Your career deserves coaching — not just counseling.”

Your blog makes sense ma’am. We need to listen and afford students to exercise his/her options based on the interest, aptitude, personality and so on. We need to present opportunities and right fit through guidance and coaching. Like facilitation we need to assist students find their best take.
    Compliments for the efforts.
